Scavenger Hunt - An Unlikely Union

A Vital Quest for the Survival of California's Majestic Condors.

SCAVENGER HUNT, a documentary by Matthew Podolsky and Eddie Chung, captures the recent crises faced by one of the planet’s most endangered species– the California condor. The film earned praise from numerous environmental film festivals for its investigation into the cause behind the California condor’s demise – lead poisoning from spent ammunition. The film was released on DVD and video on demand platforms on March 5, 2013 by Cinema Libre Studio.

SCAVENGER HUNT produced by Boise non-profit Wild Lens, features Chris Parish, who heads field operations for  a non-profit dedicated to saving birds of prey from extinction, The Peregrine Fund. In addition to Parish, the film features several Peregrine Fund employees as well as physicians, veterinarians, hunters, NRA representatives, and policymakers. Matthew Podolsky, who received degrees in both Environmental Science and Cinema/Photography, produced and co-directed the film, has previously worked on The Peregrine Fund’s Northern Arizona condor recovery project, gaining insights into the intricacies of captive breeding and the effort to monitor birds in the wild.

Synopsis: The California Condor neared extinction in the 1980s until biologists nurtured the population and saw their numbers grow upward to over 400. However, these noble birds face a grave threat which prevents them from flourishing further: lead poisoning. SCAVENGER HUNT chronicles the dilemma between bird and man, as the condors are being poisoned by lead which they contract from eating the flesh of deer with lead ammunition fragments. Filmmaker Matthew Podolsky finds the one person who understands all sides of the issue: Chris Parish, the Condor Program Director charged with protecting the birds and a lifelong hunter. Parish is the link to reconciling card-holding NRA members with the EPA activists through his efforts to convert hunters voluntarily to non-lead ammunition.
